Check Your Blind spots Unconscious Bias Tour

10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Check out the CEO Action Check Your Blind Spots unconscious bias tour on Wednesday, August 21st 2019! The bus will be located at Hope Plaza on the Washington University Medical Campus from 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. This highly interactive and eye-opening mobile tour utilizes virtual reality and gaming technology to help people better recognize their own unconscious biases or blind spots that can narrow vision and influence behaviors.

Touring the bus can take 5 to 30 minutes and includes interactive and immersive elements, including:

  • Wake up call: On a wall of ringing phones, participants pick up a receiver and overhear conversations between landlords, tenants  and potential renters that reveal unintended bias.
  • Look through a different lens: Via gamification and a digital viewfinder, participants watch an interaction between co-workers setting up a work-related event and then, identify moments when unconscious biases are demonstrated.
  • Face yourself, face reality: In front of a mirror, participants watch as their reflection fades away to reveal a different person staring back at them. Through this touchscreen experience, each new reflection shares a series of biases they’ve experienced.

The bus is hosted by our partners at BJC.  Rich Liekweg, BJC president and chief executive officer, signed the CEO Action Diversity & Inclusion Pledge last year and will visit the bus that afternoon. Participants in the tour stop will be asked to sign their own I Act On pledge.

The Check Your Blind Spots tour is created by CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion, the largest CEO-driven business commitment to improve diversity and inclusion within the workplace in the country. BJC is a proud signatory of the CEO Action coalition and through the tour, we will help employees and our community explore the nuances of unconscious bias.

We’re hopeful that the experience will help us spark a meaningful conversation around diversity and inclusion with colleagues and help us continue to address challenges head-on in a respectful and understanding manner.
