 <strong>Sandro Galea</strong>\, a physician\, epidemiologist\, and author\,
  is the Margaret C. Ryan Dean of the School of Public Health\, the Eugene S
 . and Constance Kahn Distinguished Professor in Public Health\, and Vice Pr
 ovost of Interdisciplinary Initiatives at Washington University in St. Loui
 s. As dean of WashU’s first new school in 100 years\, Galea leads the build
 ing of a world-class academic institution that works in a myriad of ways to
  advance solutions to pressing\, real-world issues involving infectious dis
 ease\; mental\, global and environmental health\; dissemination and impleme
 ntation science\; and other key areas of public health.</p><p>Galea’s schol
 arship lives at the intersection of social and psychiatric epidemiology\, w
 ith a focus on the behavioral health consequences of trauma. His work has b
 een principally funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)\, the Cen
 ters for Disease Control and Prevention\, and several foundations. Further\
 , he has been engaged in more than $100 million of extramurally funded rese
 arch. He previously held academic and leadership positions at Boston Univer
 sity\, Columbia University\, the University of Michigan\, and the New York 
 Academy of Medicine. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed literatu
 re and is a regular contributor to a range of public media\, about the soci
 al causes of health\, mental health\, and the consequences of trauma. He ha
 s been listed as one of the most widely cited scholars in the social scienc
 es.</p><p>He is past chair of the Boston Board of Health\, of the board of 
 the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health\, and past preside
 nt of the Society for Epidemiologic Research and of the Interdisciplinary A
 ssociation for Population Health Science. He is an elected member of the Na
 tional Academy of Medicine. Galea has received several lifetime achievement
  awards. Galea holds a medical degree from the University of Toronto\, grad
 uate degrees from Harvard University and Columbia University\, and honorary
  doctorates from the University of Glasgow and the Icahn School of Medicine
  at Mount Sinai.</p>
