LGBTQIA+ 101 Mini-Course

  • The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, starting in July, will be offering an LGBTQIA+ 101 Mini-Course; utilizing similar information covered in Safe Space or Safe Zone trainings (a standard LGBTQIA+ 101 curriculum utilized on many college campuses today) and the Fenway Institute’s National LGBT Health Education Center. The course explores:
  • language surrounding LGBTQIA+ people and patients,
  • topics and language to consider for promoting LGBTQ+ inclusion in the workplace/educational setting,
  • the history of LGBTQIA+ people in our society and the pathologizing of LGBTQIA+ identities,
  • the dramatic upward trend in anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation during the past 5 years and the impact of anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation on the health and safety of LGBTQIA+ people, and
  • empathy building activities to better understand experience of LGBTQIA+ people in our society. 

    The course will be hybrid amongst asynchronous activities and live sessions over five weeks. We anticipate the asynchronous sessions to take no more than 3.5-5hours total and the two live sessions taking no more than 3.5-4 hours total. Over 5 weeks, we anticipate the course taking a total of 7 – 10 hours of participants’ time. The mini course will be capped at 30 people.
