In recognition of Latiné Heritage Month, this Perspectives discussion will focus on the origins of the terms most commonly used to identify this large and diverse community. Identity, or how we understand and express ourselves, is very complex. Latiné identities are unique and shaped by factors such as geography, heritage, race, gender, and more. Acknowledging that no one term can describe a person or group of people, we will discuss the origin of the terms Latino/a, Latinx, Latiné and Hispanic to support a more informed discussion about Latiné identities. Understanding these origins more clearly, who created them and why, can inform efforts around equity and inclusion.
