Mitigating Bias to Maximize Belonging

11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Farrell Learning and Teaching Center (FLTC), 520 S Euclid Ave, St. Louis, Missouri 63110

Bias—both conscious and unconscious—can influence how we interpret information, make decisions, and interact with others in the workplace. Learning to recognize and interrupt these patterns is an important step toward creating environments where individuals feel respected, included, and able to contribute fully.

This interactive session invites participants to reflect on how bias can shape everyday interactions and workplace culture. Together, we will explore how common patterns of “algorithmic thinking” can reinforce bias, how bias and power intersect in professional environments, and how individuals can pause, reflect, and respond more intentionally in the moment.

Throughout the session, we will explore several key themes related to bias and workplace culture, including:

• how algorithmic thinking can contribute to individual bias
• the impact of bias on inclusion and workplace culture
• the relationship between bias and power
• practical strategies that can help mitigate the harms of bias in everyday interactions

These tools are relevant to individuals across campus regardless of role or rank. Future sessions will build on these ideas by exploring strategies for upstanding behavior and cultivating positive culture change within our individual spheres of influence.

Please RSVP using the form below. A box lunch will be provided. For questions, contact yokokiyoi@wustl.edu
