Mitigating Bias to Maximize Belonging – Part II: Upstanding

11:45 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
FLTC Room #304 (Farrell Learning and Teaching Center)

Bias—both conscious and unconscious—can influence how we interpret information, make decisions, and interact with patients, learners, colleagues, and communities. Learning to recognize and interrupt these patterns is an important step toward creating environments where individuals feel respected, included, and able to contribute fully.

This interactive session builds on lessons from Part I, allowing participants to reflect on and actively practice reframing internal biases before applying reframing in an interpersonal context as a means of upstanding, promoting accountability, and building inclusive community.   Together, we will also learn how to recognize patterns of bias and interrupt bias initiators and consider how we can repair relationships when bias has caused harm.

Objectives:

  • Review and practice reframing internal biases
  • Learn application of reframing as a means of upstanding and interpersonal bias mitigation
  • Explore the importance of pattern recognition in proactively interrupting bias initiators
  • Explore strategies for repair when harm has occurred.
